And motivated by regional climate modelling, climate data analysis, and dissemination of climate knowledge to support decision-making and planning? We are announcing a great opportunity to join our skilled team of climate researchers!
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a 3-year, full-time research position for a climate scientist to work with climate projections and services for Africa and specifically Ghana. DMI has recently initiated a formal collaboration with the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) with a focus on building capacity and competencies – including a focus on climate change and building a knowledge base for climate adaptation.
At the National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI, you will join a diverse team of researchers, using both regional climate modelling and statistical analysis as a foundation for climate services. NCKF has developed a climate service platform supporting climate adaptation planning in Denmark (Climate Atlas, https://www.dmi.dk/klima-atlas/introduction-to-klimaatlas/) which presents detailed projections of the future climate in Denmark. In the newly started collaboration with GMet, we plan to build on that experience and collaborate with colleagues from GMet in developing climate information relevant to Ghana.
As our new colleague, you will work with regional climate modelling and/or statistical analysis of climate change in Africa, aiming at building the foundation for climate services. While the overall aim is to study climate change impacts with societal relevance in Ghana, there will be flexibility in deciding specific research areas and questions, depending on your background, expertise, and interests. Your tasks will include leading and contributing to scientific papers that could build on climate modelling, statistical analysis, and development of climate indices relevant for climate adaptation in Ghana and/or specifically on climate services.
As part of the work, there will be many opportunities for collaboration, both at DMI and internationally. In addition to the collaboration with GMet, DMI is part of the international consortium developing and using the regional climate model HARMONIE-Climate (HCLIM) which could be another platform for international collaboration. In general, DMI is part of a wide range of international research projects and consortia.
Expected qualifications
- A PhD degree in climate science, meteorology/atmospheric science, geophysics, or related fields (e.g. physics or engineering)
- Experience with climate modelling (preferably regional atmospheric modelling, numerical weather prediction, or Earth system modelling) and/or statistical downscaling.
- Previous research working with tropical climate or climate services is an advantage
- Advanced programming skills (Linux/Unix, programming (e.g. Fortran) and scripting languages (e.g. Python)
- Good communication skills in oral and written English
The position is in the Danish National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI, which employs more than 60 climate scientists, including PhD students, and junior and senior scientists. The companion Weather Research department employs researchers working with meteorology, oceanography, and hydrology. We have a strong international profile, which is also reflected in the many nationalities employed and in the use of both English and Danish as working languages.
Employment Employment and salary will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements, as scientist/researcher, depending on previous experience. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary. Researchers who are recruited from abroad, and who are able to meet certain conditions, have the opportunity to work in Denmark for a period of 60 months under a special 26 % tax rate without deduction, instead of working under regular income taxation.
DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually.
Employment area: Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Facilities, and associated institutions.
Work place: DMI, Lyngbyvej 100, 2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark. Physical presence is expected, but ad-hoc work from home can be arranged. Some traveling is also expected.
