The Materials Synthesis and Fabrication Innovation (MSFI) group at NQCP invites applications for a fully-funded PhD Fellowship position in the area of solid-state quantum hardware development. The successful candidate will play a key role in exploring new and innovative methods to improve and go beyond the present standards in quantum technology."

Start date is 1 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project
The candidate will join our committed team working on creating and improving solid-state quantum materials with better stability and scalability for advanced quantum systems. As part of the MSFI group, the fellow will employ innovative approaches for in-situ synthesis and fabrication of quantum devices, guided by a data-driven perspective and a strong emphasis on maintaining the purity of materials."

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Contribute to the development and synthesis of novel solid-state quantum materials, working towards improving their stability and scalability for quantum systems.
  2. Assist in challenging and redefining the conventional methods of materials synthesis by integrating innovative approaches and methodologies.
  3. Collaborate with fellow team members on interdisciplinary research projects to expedite the discovery and development of high-performance quantum hardware.
  4. Contribute to the scientific community by preparing and publishing high-quality research papers, presenting findings at conferences, and participating in scientific discussions and collaborations.
The aim of this fellowship is to help improve upon existing quantum technology capabilities and also to promote a learning-focused and teamwork-oriented atmosphere where the fellow can take part in significant research. The fellow will collaborate with a group of enthusiastic and knowledgeable researchers committed to progressing the field of quantum technology.


Who are we looking for?
The ideal candidate should have a Master’s degree in Physics, Material Science, Nanotechnology, Quantum Computing, or a related field, with a strong background in quantum physics and material science. They should be motivated by challenging problems, capable of thinking outside the box, and possess a clear passion for quantum computing technologies.

The Scientific Environment
We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a strong scientific environment hosted by the NNF Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP) at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

The programme interacts on a daily basis with other quantum science initiatives at the institute, for example the Center for Quantum Devices (QDev), and the Center for Hybrid Quantum Networks (Hy-Q).

The University of Copenhagen has a long tradition for research in quantum mechanics and in the later years, this effort has further expanded.

The PhD programme
Qualifications needed for the regular programme

To be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. Physics. Terms of employment in the regular programme
Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.
Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Appointment will be subject to receipt of a security clearance.

Responsibilities and tasks

  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision
  • Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE
  • Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad
  • Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
  • Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals
  • Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project

The further process
After deadline, a number of applicants will be selected for academic assessment by an unbiased expert assessor. You are notified, whether you will be passed for assessment.

The assessor will assess the qualifications and experience of the shortlisted applicants with respect to the above mentioned research area, techniques, skills and other requirements. The assessor will conclude whether each applicant is qualified and, if so, for which of the two models. The assessed applicants will have the opportunity to comment on their assessment.
