About the position The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a permanent, full-time position for a scientist interested in the physics of the climate system and working with advanced remote sensing methods. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to strengthen this area of research at the National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI. With NCKF-researchers and collaborators, you will develop and apply remote sensing methods for retrieving information about the state of the atmosphere from satellite data.

You will work closely together with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) group in NCKF that have specialised in deriving information about the state of the atmosphere and climate from RO measurements. This work is done partly within the EUMETSAT Radio Occultation Meteorology Satellite Application Facility (ROM SAF; https://rom-saf.eumetsat.int) which DMI is managing but also in a number of other projects and activities. The position here will initially focus on analysing climate data records of water vapour and other RO variables for monitoring of the climate and for analysing and estimating climate trends of the troposphere. Future work will include analyses of temperature data records from various satellite sensors to understand the behaviour of the stratosphere. Other future topics will depend on new developments in climate applications of GNSS RO data. The responsibilities also include contributing to the publication of articles in peer-reviewed journals describing the research results and contributing to writing proposals to support the activities.

Expected qualifications

  • A PhD degree in natural sciences or in a technical discipline (e.g., geophysics, meteorology, atmospheric physics, physics, engineering)

  • Experience in atmospheric science, data science and/or atmospheric remote sensing from satellites

  • Experience with the GNSS RO retrieval method is an advantage

  • Advanced programming skills (e.g., Python, Fortran, Linux/Unix)

  • Good problem solving skills and interest to work in a team

  • Proficiency in English is required and good organisational and communication skills are important. If non-Danish speaker, a wish to learn Danish within a few years.

About DMI and NCKF The position is in the NCKF, which is a department at DMI. NCKF conducts climate research for the Kingdom of Denmark (Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands) and bring together climate knowledge to form the basis for green transition and climate adaptation. The activities include assessments of observed and future climate change of the physical climate system with focus on the Arctic, Greenland and on extreme weather and ocean conditions around Denmark. The research carried out in the department is based on both global and regional modelling as well as observations from remote sensing (e.g., GNSS RO), in-situ measurements and fieldwork.

NCKF employs approximately 60 staff members - most of whom are climate researchers including PhD students, junior and senior scientists. The department also includes a smaller group of project managers, administrative staff and generalists who work in close collaboration with colleagues in the other DMI departments. NCKF has a strong international profile, which is also reflected in the many nationalities employed and in the use of both English and Danish as working languages.

Employment and Salary Employment and salary will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements, at the scientist level, depending on previous experience. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary. DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours and paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually.

Employees, who are recruited from abroad and able to meet certain requirements, have the opportunity to work in Denmark for a period of 60 months under a special 26% tax rate without deduction, instead of working under regular income taxation.

DMI is part of the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities and is located on Lyngbyvej 100, 2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark. From November 2023, we will move to new premises but still be located in the same area of Copenhagen.

Physical presence is expected at least on a weekly basis. DMI, being a governmental institution, can unfortunately not fully or partially cover your moving expenses.
