The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a permanent, full-time position for a climate scientist interested in the physics and the physical modelling and predictability of the climate system. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to strengthen this area of research in the National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI.

About the position You will be working in a stimulating research environment as part of a team in the NCKF and, together with other researchers at DMI, being part of our international research collaboration in Earth System modelling (i.e. EC-Earth consortium). In the beginning of your employment, you will together with other team members be working in the newly funded EU Horizon Europe project Impetus4Change with the aim of improving near-term climate predictions for societal transformation.

Your main tasks and key responsibilities will be to:

  • Contribute to the Impetus4Change project with focus on providing seamless homogeneous climate predictive information covering the coming 30 years. Here you will investigate and develop new methods to produce new and better products to end-users based on existing multi-model ensembles of climate predictions and projections.
  • Contribute to applications of the above developed climate prediction system for production (i.e., DCPP experiments) and to the understanding of mechanisms giving rise to decadal predictability.
  • Contribute to improving the EC-Earth climate prediction system for better decadal predictions as part of other on-going research projects in NCKF.
  • Future work will include establishing climate services through robust climate predictions using EC-Earth combined with other systems and advanced statistical analysis, in particular for climate extreme.
In addition, we expect that you contribute to the publications of articles in peer-reviews journals and contribute to the writing of proposals to support the activities.

Expected qualifications
  • A PhD degree in climate science or other relevant geophysical disciplines
  • Experience with climate modelling, preferably global climate models.
  • Research experience working with large climate data sets. Proficiency in statistical analysis of global climate data is an advantage.
  • Good Computing skills, including the knowledge of UNIX/Linux and python or similar
  • Good problem solving skills and interest to work in teams
  • Proficiency in English is required and good organisational and communication skills are important. If non-Danish speaker, a wish to learn Danish within a few years to also be able to support DMI’s role as national climate advisor to the Danish Government
About DMI and NCKF The position is in the NCKF, which is a department at DMI. NCKF conducts climate research for the Kingdom of Denmark (Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands) and bring together climate knowledge to form the basis for green transition and climate adaptation. The activities include assessments of observed and future climate change of the physical climate system with focus on the Arctic, Greenland and on extreme weather and ocean conditions around Denmark. The research carried out in the department is based on both global and regional modelling as well as observations from remote sensing, in-situ measurements and fieldwork.

NCKF employs approximately 60 staff members - most of whom are climate researches including PhD students, junior and senior scientists. The department also includes a smaller group of project managers, administrative staff and generalists who work in close collaborate with colleagues in the other DMI departments. NCKF has a strong international profile, which is also reflected in the many nationalities employed and in the use of both English and Danish as working languages.

Employment and salary Employment and salary will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements, at the scientist level, depending on previous experience. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary. DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours and paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. Employees, who are recruited from abroad and able to meet certain requirements, have the opportunity to work in Denmark for a period of 60 months under a special 26% tax rate without deduction, instead of working under the regular income taxation.

DMI is part of the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities and located on Lyngbyvej 100, 2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark. From November 2023, we will move to new premises, but still being located in same area of Copenhagen.

Physical presence is expected at least on a weekly basis. DMI, being a governmental institution, can unfortunately not fully or partially cover your moving expenses.
