University of Copenhagen

A 2-year Postdoc position is available in the Ice and Climate research group at the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI), University of Copenhagen for a strong candidate with a background in geophysics and glaciology.

The Postdoc will be employed as part of the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Center PRECISE – PREdiCtions of Ice Sheets on Earth with the overall aim of reducing uncertainties in the projected contribution from ice sheets to the global mean sea level rise. The center includes ice flow modelling studies, ice core studies, surface geophysical studies, theoretical ice physics studies, as well as integration of data and numerical models to enable better simulations of ice sheet melt and mass loss under global warming.

The Postdoc will work with ice flow and radar glaciology to understand ice flow dynamics and ice material properties. The Postdoc will be part of an international research team in PRECISE, including researchers from NBI, the Danish Meteorological Institute and Northumbria University in Newcastle, UK.

The postdoc’s duties will primarily include research within the field of ice flow modelling and radar glaciology, including obligations with regards to publication and scientific communication as well as research-based teaching.

In addition, the postdoc will perform scientific coordination tasks related to the PRECISE center and assist the center leader in day-to-day operations. These tasks include day-to-day managing tasks, reporting to the Novo Nordisk Foundation, tasks related to outreach and dissemination, internal communication within PRECISE, and organizing and contributing to scientific workshops and events within PRECISE.

The position will be hosted in NBI’s Ice and Climate group. The Ice and Climate group is a world-leading research group in ice-core related climate research. The main activities of the group are ice core drilling, analysis of ice cores, and ice flow modelling with the overall aim to understand climate change and evolution of ice sheets. The group has a large network of national and international collaborators. There will be possibilities to join the fieldwork on the Greenland ice sheet. For more information on the activities in the Ice and Climate group, visit www.iceandclimate.dk.
